Natural gas vehicle industry leaders are stepping up safety
initiatives following incidents in which drivers have used uninspected
compressed natural gas (CNG) or LPG cylinders on natural gas
installations. Though no deaths resulted from the incidents, both
situations could have easily resulted in fatalities, an eventuality
that the industry plans to head off through increased customer
education.
Warnings will be posted at all CNG refuelling bowsers reminding
motorists that LPG cylinders are not suitable for CNG vehicles and that
CNG cylinders are required to undergo regular testing and
re-certification.
Stakeholders are also hoping to develop a national database, in
cooperation with cylinder manufacturers, to track ownership of
cylinders and to advise owners in advance when testing periods are
approaching. Regular periodic vehicles inspection are also being
reinforced to identify any potential safety risk involving CNG
equipment.
