Honda Civic GX (CNG) fills up at homeUSA

In an endeavour to identify the cleanest cars on American roads, Forbes examined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) scores for air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions (carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane). One of the stand-out vehicles was the Honda Civic CNG (compressed natural gas) with a pollution score of 9.5 and a greenhouse score of 9 - enough to earn it a designation of Smartway Elite Vehicle.

The car costs about $2,000 more than the Civic hybrid and gets lower gas mileage, but proponents of CNG-powered cars note that owners can refuel at their home by tapping into the same natural gas used for home heating.

For each category, the EPA rates vehicles on a scale of zero to 10, with 10 being best. The closer to 20 the combined score, the cleaner the car. The EPA designation of Smartway Elite is only given to those vehicles that score 9 or better in both categories.
