Biomethane coming to the French natural gas network

Findings of a study of health and environmental risks from the injection of biomethane fuel into the natural gas distribution network, requested from the French Agency for Health and Safety in the Environment and Workplace (AFSSET) in September 2006, have now been released. As was indicated by BioGasMax in Dec 2007 (see NGV Global article), its conclusions are “unequivocally favourable when biogas is produced from methanisation of waste or from storage of non-dangerous waste.” Furthermore, AFSSET states (translated), "The agency considers that there is no specific health risk associated with the injection into the network of certain types of cleaned biogas, compared to natural gas."

The Government of Myanmar is enjoying the benefits of its drive to have all vehicles in the country eventually converted to compressed natural gas (CNG), starting from buses and trucks down to privately owned cars. Savings of nearly $US8 million dollars per month, achieved by substituting imported fuel with domestically-produced natural gas, has been reported by Xinhua news. It was able to cut import of 2.26 million gallons of diesel and almost 1 million gallons of petrol monthly, the report said, quoting the disclosure of a recent paper reading session dealing with traffic rule education. According to official statistics published in October, nearly 23,000 vehicles, of which passenger buses are the majority, have been converted from diesel or petrol to CNG in Myanmar. The country also encourages importation of CNG-powered vehicles.

Sweden, Stockholm

SL, the regional company responsible for bus, tram, subway and railway traffic in and around Stockholm, has announced that, by the end of 2008, it will have 80 buses running on biomethane.  Over the next four years, the company says that number will increase to 500. This fleet expansion will be based on an expansion of the local production capacity for biomethane from various locally available organic waste resources.  An SL analysis of different fuel alternatives shows that biomethane is the most environmental friendly and economically attractive biofuel alternative.  Bioethanol does not offer the same environmental advantages, and there are also some ethical concerns, the SL analysis says.
