Eco Mobiliste 2010 – NGVs Galore

February 26, 2010 | Switzerland, Geneva

The Fiat Punto Evo 1.4 CNG - EcoChampion 2010 - Small Cars category

One third of top eighty cars are natural gas / biogas vehicles

NGVs achieve 1st place in four categories

The 2010 edition of  Eco Mobiliste (Ecomobiliste 2010 de l’ATE), published in time for the Geneva Motor Show, is once again populated with large numbers of natural gas / biogas vehicles. Among the ten best vehicles, five are NGVs. A third of the top 80 vehicles are NGVs; by comparison only four are hybrids.

In the individual assessment categories, NGVs dominate:

  • 1st in Small Cars category – Fiat Punto Natural Power Evo – three NGVs among top five
  • 1st in Middle Class category – VW Passat EcoFuel
  • 1st in Minivan up to 5 seats category – Fiat Qubo Natural Power – seven NGVs in top nine
  • 1st in Minivan with more than 5 seats category – VW Touran 1.4 TSI EcoFuel – seven NGVs fill the first seven places

The selection, using an objective system for evaluating environmental criteria, is made each year from more than 1500 vehicles currently available as passenger cars in Switzerland. In Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein there are now approximately 9,000 natural gas vehicles which refuel at around 120 filling stations with a 80:20 natural gas / biogas mix.

The Geneva Motor Show will feature the Fiat 500 1.4 Natural Power Turbo concept car and Fiat Doblo Natural Power Turbo (1.4 l/115 hp). These and other NGVs will be on display at the GASMOBIL stand, where visitors will find the Swiss Natural Gas Association.

The Swiss Transport and Environment Association (ATE) findings this year are consistent with 2009, proving the environmental credentials of natural gas vehicles.  Details of the 2010 results are available here.

Natural gas fueled vehicles stand out as overall winners in the annual vehicle environmental impact survey carried out by Switzerland’s Transport and Environment Association (ATE), known as the EcoMobiListe.
