Madrid is continuing its drive for clean air by preparing to regulate the purchase of new taxis and buses that run on diesel, according to an NGVA Europe report. The action makes the city the first in Europe to act against diesel for environmental reasons and states that while the municipality will not force the purchase of any special equipment, it will be acting against both CO2 and NO2 emissions.
The decision also corresponds with a recent announcement made by Pedro Calvo, the delegate for security and mobility of the Madrid municipality and President of EMT Madrid. He stated that of the 60 new buses already ordered for 2010, 48 will be compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles and the rest will be diesel only because there are no CNG versions in some specific configurations available.
In January Spanish natural gas supplier Gas Natural was awarded a contract to build a refuelling station for servicing EMT buses and other NGVs.
