The benefits of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles on Delhi’s air
quality look set to spread beyond public transport vehicles and into
the light commercial vehicle arena. The Hindu newspaper reports that a
decision to mandate the use of CNG in light commercial vehicles (LCVs)
in the city, originally slated for last year, is to be actioned from
July 1.
The paper reports Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf as saying that the
Transport Department will shortly issue formal notifications requiring
LCV operators to switch to CNG and undergo compliance tests to renew
operations permits after July 1.
A Delhi Government study, "Cost Benefit Assessment of CNG Introduction
in Delhi'', has proved demonstrable economic and environmental benefits
to the city of Delhi since public transport vehicles were mandated to
use CNG in 2000. Cars and three wheelers are achieving 68% cost
reductions compared to petrol driven vehicles while buses are achieving
36% cost reductions compared to diesel vehicles, delivering payback
periods of between nine and forty six months, depending on vehicle duty
cycles.
