The VW Motorsport CNG-powered Scirocco GT-24 in action at the Nürburgring
A Volkswagen Scirocco GT24-CNG EcoFuel has achieved a class victory and finished well-placed amongst the world’s best competition at the 2009 Nürburgring 24 hour event, perhaps the world’s toughest circuit. With innovative technology the GT24-CNG won the category for vehicles with alternative propulsion systems (AT) and in the general classification achieved 17th place overall.A second Scirocco, also entered by Volkswagen Motorsport, achieved second placing in the AT category. Noting the two Sciroccos were apparently the only entrants in the AT category, the real achievement is the 17th place overall, ahead of several more powerful cars.
The high octane offered by natural gas fuel (130 RON) was utilised by VW Motorsport engineers to exploit the Scirocco’s turbo-charged engine, achieving performance tuning of 282 hp and 330 Newton meters torque. The knowledge gained from the engine development will be applied to the mass vehicle market. “In the 24-hour race we have seen the great potential natural gas poses as a fuel,” says Dr. Timm Kehler. “With a fuel engine technology, optimized gas vehicles are a success in Formula racing.”
