Natural gas vehicles have taken out 2nd and 9th rankings in the influential FIA EcoTest of vehicles for 2007. The Volvo V70 2.4 Bi-fuel came within just two points of taking out top place, coming second to the Toyota Prius hybrid vehicle, despite having a significantly larger engine than the Prius (2.4l vs 1.5 l). The smaller engine in the Prius gave it the edge on fuel economy, consuming 5.02 l/100 km vs 7.15 for the Volvo. Meanwhile the Opel Zafira 1.6 CNG came in at ninth place. The EcoTest
test procedure was jointly developed by Germany’s ADAC and the FIA
Foundation and has been used since 2003 to evaluate vehicles on the
commercial market.
