Ferry operators in Bangkok, Thailand are making the switch to compressed natural gas (CNG) following the successful conversion and trial of a ferry operating on the Chao-Phraya River. The trial commenced late last year, proving successful early on, resulting in 30% fuel cost savings for the operator Chao Phraya Express Boat Co., Ltd and commitments to convert 40 more boats to dual-fuel operation.
Conversions for the vessel were performed by GFS Asia-Pacific Co., Ltd. (GFS), supported by energy company PTT Plc Ltd (PTT). GFS converted the existing Cummins NTA 855M, 350 HP diesel engine, to dual-fuel CNG/diesel operation. Press releases from PTT say that other ferry operators are also considering making the switch, based on observations of the Chao-Praya trials.
In preparation for the trials, Thailand’s Marine Department released a notification on May, 2006, setting up standards and principles for CNG installations in boats. In an effort to encourage other operators to switch to CNG, the Marine Department is also believed to be preparing recommendations and policies exempting CNG ferry operators from annual renewal and inspection fees.
