Australia, Sydney
The NSW Government has confirmed the Govt owned bus operator Sydney
Buses has placed orders for 255 Mercedes Benz compressed natural gas
(CNG) buses. The decision reverses a previous decision, made almost two
years ago, not to purchase CNG buses on commercial grounds.
Though a reason for the change in position wasn’t given specifically,
NSW Transport Minister John Watkins said, "The option we’ve selected
gives the greatest benefit both environmentally and operationally.”
The purchase is part of a $250 million deal, which includes 255 Mercedes Benz CNG chassis and 250 Euro 5 Volvo diesel chassis.
Once supplied, Sydney Buses will operate a 50% CNG fuelled fleet, with
diesel being used for longer haul operations in areas without natural
gas supply.
