GasHighWay Project Initiates National Reports on Biogas Production

February 24, 2010 – 11:39 am | Europe

GasHighWay logoIncludes statements on the impact of biomethane use for transport

Within the GasHighWay project implementation each country (excluding Sweden) has developed its national report on the current status of biogas production as well as identification of legal and other important conditions for biogas upgrading potential. National reports also inform on market trends and biogas/biomethane production forecast. These reports provide an overview of the biogas situation in each participating country, and include statements about implications for transport. Country reports are available for Austria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Italy and Poland, from here.

Study: Biomethane Benefits Could be Greater than Previously Thought

February 19, 2010 – 12:38 am | Source: NGVAmerica | Sweden

Biomethane from refuse produces 95 per cent less greenhouse gas emissions than gasoline, cites NGVAmerica from a Lund University (Sweden) research group report. Further, with a few simple improvements to a typical biomethane plant, the figure can rise to 120 per cent – that is, biomethane becomes better than climate neutral. In Sweden, there are about 20 similar plants to the one analyzed, producing biomethane for use in cars and other vehicles.

Analysis of Biogas Use Recognises Vehicle Fuel as Most Carbon Efficient

February 19, 2010 – 12:05 am | United Kingdom

Using biogas as vehicle fuel has a carbon saving of -97 kgCO²eqv

Following an analysis of different uses for biogas, Bristol-based research firm Eunomia has found using biogas to power vehicles had the lowest carbon footprint. Using biogas on-site in a combined heat and power (CHP) plant was next, then pumping gas into the grid was the next most efficient, according to a report from Lets Recycle. Consultant Ann Ballinger observed that despite use as a vehicle fuel being the most carbon efficient way of using biogas, and therefore having the most positive impact on climate change, there was no government support.

Quebec Receives Govt Funding for Biogas Waste-to-Fuel Project

February 12, 2010 – 1:14 pm | Canada, Rivière-du-Loup, Québec

Canadian PM Steve Harper announces project details

A green infrastructure project in Rivière-du-Loup, Quebec, funded on a cost-sharing basis by the Canadian Government, will see the construction of a system to treat organic waste and convert it to biogas, a renewable fuel. This project operates under an agreement-in-principle undertaken with the Government of Quebec relating to the $1 billion federal Green Infrastructure Fund of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. “Projects like the one announced in Rivière-du-Loup are part of our strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and, in so doing, combat climate change,” said Prime Minister Steve Harper.

Sweden’s Vehicles Use More Biogas in 2009

January 29, 2010 – 7:01 pm | Source: Swedish Gas Association | Sweden

Renewable biogas now 65% of total vehicle fuels used

At the end of 2009 there were over 23,000 gas vehicles in Sweden and 104 public filling stations, reports Gasforeningen, the Swedish Gas Association. Vehicle fuel sales during 2009 amounted to more than 67 million cubic meters, an increase of 16 percent compared to 2008. The share of biomethane in vehicles’ gas has also grown, recording an increase  over 2008 of 27 percent. Vehicle gas replaced petrol and diesel equivalent to 45 000 passenger cars in 2009,  resulting in approximately 130 000 tonnes less carbon dioxide being released.

Organic Renewable Energy – Greener CNG and LNG for North America

January 25, 2010 – 5:45 pm | USA, Houston TX and Waltham MASS
Harvest Power facility

Harvest Power facility

North American company Waste Management Inc. has agreed to invest in Harvest Power to expand next generation organics recycling facilities across the United States and Canada. Harvest is developing innovative high solids aerobic and anaerobic digestion and composting technologies, which accelerate the decomposition of organic materials to produce renewable energy that offsets the use of fossil fuels. The process creates clean biogas that can be converted into electricity, liquefied natural gas, or compressed natural gas, and also generate high quality, nutrient-rich compost products.

Northern Ireland’s B9 Shipping, a developer of 100% renewable powered cargo ships, is planning to set sail with a new ship in 2012, according to a Cleantech report. About 60 per cent of the thrust will come from conventional soft sails and, in calm conditions or to manoeuvre in port, a carbon neutral bio-methane engine will be used, the fuel for which would come from the anaerobic digestion of food waste. “We’re aiming to have our first ship in the water in 2012 to be ready for the first of the biomass power stations coming online in England,” said David Surplus, managing director of B9 Shipping and chairman of B9 Energy Group.

“Methane gas is by far the most accessible fuel as an alternative to diesel.” – Lars Mårtensson, Environmental Director Volvo Trucks

80% methane replacement expected after engine refinement and testing

Volvo Trucks is staking a claim in the heavy-duty natural gas vehicle arena, announcing it will be the first manufacturer with an ‘efficient’  natural gas diesel dual-fuel engine meeting Euro V exhaust emission standards (introduced in 2009). Field testing will start in Sweden and the UK in 2010. “This unique technology allows us to combine the advantages of gas with the diesel engine’s high efficiency rating, which is about 30-40 percent superior to that of the spark plug engine,” comments Lars Mårtensson, Environmental Director Volvo Trucks. “As a result, this truck consumes considerably less energy than traditional gas trucks do.”
