Fraunhofer Delivers Biomethane Fuel from Market Waste

February 10, 2012 – 2:17 pm | Germany, Stuttgart

Fuel from market waste

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB in Stuttgart have developed a new facility that ferments waste from wholesale fruit and vegetable markets, university cafeterias and canteens, to make biomethane, which can be compressed into high-pressure cylinders and used as fuel. In early 2012, the researchers will begin operating a pilot plant adjacent to Stuttgart’s wholesale market.

Ireland’s Bord Gáis Funds Research into Biomethane as Transport Fuel

January 9, 2012 – 6:45 pm | Ireland

“Biomethane is far superior to first generation liquid biofuels such as ethanol and biodiesel – Dr Jerry Murphy, ERI

Ground-breaking research into the use of renewable gas at University College Cork’s Environmental Research Institute (ERI) in Ireland has received an EUR 0.25 million (USD 0.318 million) boost for 2012. The initiative which involves minority funding from national natural gas distributor Bord Gáis Networks (BGN) will enable the Institute to develop its research beyond the academic sphere and into industry. ERI and Bord Gáis have recently issued a report entitled “The Future of Renewable Gas in Ireland”, which outlined that the potential resource of renewable gas in Ireland is sufficient to provide for 10% of transport fuel or 40% of natural gas used in houses.

NGV Global Releases Position Paper on Verification at CNG Refuelling – Recommends RFID Systems

December 8, 2011 – 2:06 pm

NGV Global is recommending RFID systems as a means of verifying CNG vehicles and cylinders at the point of refuelling. The recommendations follow more than 12 months of study on the subject and are outlined in a 66 page Position Paper released by the association this week. The paper arose as a result of discussions with NGV Global’s Technical Committee on means to reduce the incidence of illegal or accidental tampering of CNG cylinders and installations. Executive director, Brett Jarman, says the intent of the paper is to reduce preventable incidents and to stimulate discussion and action within the industry and regulators. ”Our observations of industry incidents causing harm or damage indicated that most were the result of human negligence or interference and could be prevented if sufficient controls were put in place at the point where high pressure CNG fuel is delivered to a vehicle,” said Mr Jarman. “This is the point where a non-compliant vehicle potentially becomes dangerous.”
