HighMount Exploration and Production, a natural-gas-focused energy company based out of Houston, Texas, is aiming to demonstrate the full power of natural gas as a vehicle fuel as it prepares a 2007 SL600 Mercedes-Benz roadster for speed events in the US this year. Chicago-based tuning firm Speedriven says that after contesting a speed event in March the intention is to apply a natural gas conversion to the proven race technology with the intention of challenging the world speed record (364.6 k/hr) for natural gas passenger vehicles set by a converted Audi in 2009.

After its inaugural season in 2010 the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup heads into 2011 with an exciting calendar. The eco-friendly Volkswagen one-make cup encompasses eight DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters) events with ten races including a new addition to the 2011 event schedule: the Red-Bull-Ring at Spielberg, Austria. The season opener and the finale for the biomethane-powered cars that achieve 80% CO2 emissions reduction will be held at Hockenheim.

Volkswagen’s biomethane-powered Scirocco will crown this year’s one-make racing season with the Race of Champions in Dusseldorf, Germany. On 27 and 28 November 2010 Formula 1 heroes like Sebastian Vettel (Germany), motorcycle champions of the calibre of Mick Doohan (Australia) or Le Mans legends of the likes of Tom Kristensen (Denmark) will engage in duels with the near 275-hp Cup-Scirocco. Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen said, “We’re proud that the organisers of the Race of Champions have selected the racing version of the Scirocco as one of the cars to be fielded.”
