US EPA Workshop Focuses on Certification Under New HD Rules

October 11, 2011 – 10:42 am | USA

On November 3rd, the U.S. EPA will hold a workshop to discuss the recently promulgated greenhouse gas emissions standards and fuel efficiency standards for medium- and heavy-duty engines and vehicles, reports NGVAmerica. The standards aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase fuel efficiency for on-road heavy-duty vehicles. This workshop will focus on topics that must be explained in the short term to facilitate manufacturers wishing to certify early. The workshop is applicable to the following industry sectors:

(1) Class 2b & 3 Heavy-duty Pickup Trucks and Vans;

(2) Heavy-duty Engines; and

(3) Class 7 & 8 Combination Tractors and Class 2b-8 Vocational Vehicles.

IHI Marine United Develops Large-Scale LNG Fuel Containership Concept

August 31, 2011 – 4:01 pm | Japan, Tokyo

IHIMU's LNG-powered containership design

The approaching 1 January 2016 deadline for enforcement of IMO (International Maritime Organization) developed Tier III emission controls, governing NOx emissions from ship fuel in Emission Control Areas (ECAs), has led to the development by IHI Marine United Inc. (IHIMU), of a low-emission containership that can run on liquefied natural gas (LNG) in addition to the conventional fuel of heavy oil. A concept design has now been completed for a 10,000 TEU* large container vessel.

Magna Steyr Deploys MB Econic for Low-Noise Night-Shift Operations

August 12, 2011 – 11:12 pm | Austria, Graz and Germany, Stuttgart

Mercedes-Benz Econic NGT 1828

Austrian automotive manufacturer Magna Steyr AG, a subsidiary of Magna International, has concluded a study testing a natural gas Mercedes Benz Econic initiated late 2009 together with Vienna University of Technology. The study set about  to determine its suitability as a transport vehicle to support  a reintroduced night-shift at Magna Steyr’s main production facility in Graz.  As a result of the research findings, in future the environmentally-friendly transport and supply logistics operations of the Magna Steyr Group are to be carried out for the most part using natural gas and biogas-driven Mercedes-Benz Econic trucks. Initially, around 20 to 30 diesel trucks are to be replaced by Econic semitrailer tractor vehicles.

Marine LNG Engine Redesign Addresses Methane Emissions

August 9, 2011 – 5:06 pm | Source: LNG GOT (Teknisk Ukeblad) | Finland and England

Wartsila Dual-Fuel Technology

Finland’s Wärtsilä and England’s Rolls-Royce, technology providers for marine engines, are separately shifting focus from CO2 emissions to concentrate on reduction of methane emissions from LNG engines for shipping. According to an LNG GOT report, which refers to Norwegian journal “Teknisk Ukeblad’, 2012 will see Wärtsilä ready with a new generation of LNG engines in which methane emissions are greatly reduced. “No one focused on methane emissions earlier. It was enough to try to reduce the NOx. Now the focus is directed at reducing methane emissions,” said sales manager John Martinsen, Wärtsilä Ship Power in Norway to Teknisk Ukeblad.

Sturman Camless Engine Set to Ignite Natural Gas HD Transportation

July 7, 2011 – 3:45 am | USA, Woodland Park CO

Report details peak efficiencies exceeding 40% and fuel consumption reduction up to 18%

The application of a fully flexible electro-hydraulic valve train (“camless” engine) designed and developed by Sturman Industries was the key enabler for achieving breakthrough thermal efficiencies while meeting the ultra-low emission requirements set by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). “The ability to meet low emission requirements at high efficiencies without a cumbersome and costly SCR system will be a game-changer for both the power generation and transportation sectors. In particular, this technology is a solution for California’s interest to utilise biomethane, also known as renewable natural gas (RNG),” reports Joe Vollmer, Director of Government Affairs for Sturman Industries.

Audi TCNG

Audi TCNG

Under the motto of “Audi balanced mobility”, Audi has committed to attaining neutral CO2 balance across the entire mobility chain. The Audi e-gas project, a milestone along this route, is capable of simultaneously solving several pressing problems faced by the sustainable energy-supply industry. In the process chain clean power, hydrogen and methane are produced: three key sources of energy for future mobility. Included as a component of Audi’s plans is production of a natural gas vehicle for their A3 range.

Transport Sector Has Fastest Growing GHG Emissions in New EU Stats

April 29, 2011 – 9:26 am | Europe

Eurostat figures for climate change have been released for the decade 1999-2008 showing a decline of 2.4 % of total EU GHG emissions. Hiding in this data is the continuing rise of emissions by the transport sector, by 5% over the same period, apparently explained by increasing transport volumes and the lack of significant shift towards cleaner modes and fuels. GHG emissions for transport grew from 916 to 962 million tonnes CO2-equivalent. NGV Global statistics for the same decade for Europe showed an annual average growth rate of 12% for natural gas vehicles (all types). With NGVs offering significant reductions in GHGs increasing this rate has the potential to counter the rise in transport emissions, particularly as “Demographic projections and economic structures make it likely that the demand for transport – and thus its volume – will continue to grow in the coming decades.”

France Sets Low-Emission Bonuses for 2011

December 26, 2010 – 2:33 am | France

A joint ministry (Ecology, Economy and Budget) statement in France has declared several changes to the 2011 ecological bonus-malus scheme which sets incentives for purchasing low-emission vehicles. The government says the bonus-malus, which was initiated in 2008, has fully met its objectives by encouraging buyers of new vehicles to choose low CO2 models. Declaring their goal achieved, the government has removed the bonus for buying a natural gas vehicle (NGV) from 1 January 2011. Reduced bonuses remain in place however for purchasers of low-emission vehicles in general, including any NGVs that fit within the approved emission brackets.
