
VW Scirocco - biomethane power on display
After its debut in the 2010 Scirocco R-Cup the 275 hp VW Scirocco GT 24 will again be fielded at the Race of Champions in 2011. The world’s best racers will meet with each other in the biomethane-powered coupé at the Düsseldorf Football Arena on 3 and 4 December. 2011 Formula One world champions Sebastian Vettel is back to do one better, have tasted defeat in 2010 at the hands of U.S. Motocross superstar Travis Pastrana. Pastrana took advantage of the Scirocco’s innovative push-to-pass button which delivers an additional 50 hp for a few seconds, to snatch victory.

Volkswagen R GmbH, producer of the Scirocco R, has extended its sponsorship of the Scirocco R-Cup to Asia for 2011, with five events to be run in China and two in Malaysia. The Scirocco R-Cup Volkswagen uses natural gas technology (compressed natural gas / biomethane) in a one-make cup with identical touring cars. And for the first time the one-make cup will be held under the Scirocco R-Cup name.

The eco-friendly Volkswagen one-make cup encompasses eight DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters) events with ten races including a new addition to the 2011 event schedule: the Red-Bull-Ring at Spielberg, Austria. The season opener and the finale for the biomethane-powered cars that achieve 80% CO2 emissions reduction will be held at Hockenheim.
