Rally of Champions 2011 Prepares for Vettel’s Revenge

After its debut in the 2010 Scirocco R-Cup the 275 hp VW Scirocco GT 24 will again be fielded at the Race of Champions in 2011. The world’s best racers will meet with each other in the biomethane-powered coupé at the Düsseldorf Football Arena on 3 and 4 December. 2011 Formula One world champions Sebastian Vettel is back to do one better, have tasted defeat in 2010 at the hands of U.S. Motocross superstar Travis Pastrana. Pastrana took advantage of the Scirocco’s innovative push-to-pass button which delivers an additional 50 hp for a few seconds, to snatch victory.

Team biogas.se Takes Home Gold and Silver in 2011 STCC

After an exciting final weekend at Mantorp Park, Sweden’s “greenest” racing team, racing biogas fuelled vehicles, can call themselves Swedish Touring Car Championship (STCC) champions. The celebration was only dampened by the fact that Fredrik Ekblom missed the gold in the individual competition after a much-debated incident in the final heat. “This win is proof of the project’s success,” said Kristoffersson as he lifted the heavy trophy, following an outstanding season of biomethane-powered performance at the top level of touring car motorsport. The project, involving E.ON, Volkswagen and Team biogas.se, commenced with the first race of the 2009 season.

CNG-Fueled Collegiate Racecar Sets World Record

The CNG-fuelled collegiate race car leaves the OSU workshop, headed for a world record.

Give engineering students a workshop to develop innovative vehicles and they are happy. Give them a race track to try out their creations and they are ecstatic. Give them natural gas for fuel and they become world record breakers. Oklahoma State University racing enthusiasts have set a record by running their natural gas-fueled formula race car 328 laps in a 24-hour period at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit in Oklahoma. Hallett is a 1.8 mile, 10 turn road racing course between Tulsa and Stillwater.

Biomethane-Powered Scirocco GT 24 Now Leads STCC Championship

Team biogas.se, with its three biomethane-powered 1998 cc VW Motorsport Scirocco GT 24 cars, has just cause to celebrate. After the fifth racing event of the Swedish Touring Car Championship (STCC) series held at Falkenberg, the fastest racing circuit in Scandinavia, driver Fredrik Ekblom goes into the lead of the Championship with 125 points. In a thrilling first race Ekblom started in pole position and held off all-comers to notch up his third win of the season. The second race saw him start in eighth position, in accordance with race rules, where he also finished – a strong enough performance to head the championship by just two points.

VW Scirocco Triumphant at Nurburgring

Volkswagen Motorsport entered biomethane-powered 330 hp GT24 Sciroccos into the Nurburgring Nordschleife 24-hour event again this year and came up triumphant, just as it did in 2010, in the alternative fuel class and well as performing well in overall placings. Compared with conventional spark ignition engines the use of biomethane allows CO2 emissions to be reduced by 80 per cent. The drivers of car #117 (Nasser Al-Attiyah, Carlos Sainz, Giniel de Villiers) finished first in the alt-fuel category and 27th overall in a  field of more than 200 starters, while car #116 (Vanina Ickx, Wyss, Bernd Ostmann) finished second and 46th respectively.

Two Podiums for biogas.se at STCC Gothenburg

Team biogas.se’s Fredrik Ekblom took two new podiums when STCC visited Gothenburg last weekend. Driving a biomethane-powered VW Motorsport Scirocco, Ekblom performed impressively to take second place in the first race and third, in pouring rain, in the second race. The result places Ekblom a clear second in the driver championship, just two points behind leader Rickard Rydell. Team biogas.se also advanced to second place in the team championship table after completion of the fourth of nine racing weekends in the STCC calendar.

Designer Marlon Kirby and car builder David B. McMahan, already a successful world speed record-breaking combination, have set their sights on a ‘green’ record with their newest street-legal supercar offering, the Maxximus LNG 2000, reports Inhabitat. The 1600 hp V8 supercar runs on natural gas to create what they claim is the fastest green car on the market today. Another LNG-powered vehicle is also reportedly in the works — the Prodigy — another supercar for the consumer market said to have a 2000-horsepower engine and a million-dollar price tag.

Scirocco R-Cup Spreads to Asia for 2011

Volkswagen R GmbH, producer of the Scirocco R, has extended its sponsorship of the Scirocco R-Cup to Asia for 2011, with five events to be run in China and two in Malaysia. The Scirocco R-Cup Volkswagen uses natural gas technology (compressed natural gas / biomethane) in a one-make cup with identical touring cars. And for the first time the one-make cup will be held  under the Scirocco R-Cup name.

Team biogas.se has triumphed again at the Swedish Touring Car Championship with driver Fredrik Ekblom starting in pole position in his biomethane-powered VW Scirocco GT24 and winning the first race at Mantorp Park last weekend. The victory was his second of the season and takes him from sixth to second on the championship leader board. “The key to our success in the last two competitions has been that we’ve qualified well,” said Ekblom on Saturday. “In the qualifier, the team made it possible for me to get the best time when we needed it, just like on Ring Knutstorp.”

The Swedish Touring Car Championship (STCC) once again features two VW Sciroccos being raced by Team Biogas.se in 2011. Team Biogas.se has together with EON, Volkswagen and LRF proved in 2010 that it’s possible to win races in Sweden’s toughest racing series, STCC, with cars running on biomethane. Although off to a disappointing first round at the Jyllandsringen circuit two weeks ago, drivers Fredrik Ekblom (No. 14) and Patrik Olsson (No. 15) raced to 1st and 5th places respectfully in heat one of the second round at Knutstorp. Biomethane power has now been victorious in 4 heats through 2010-11.

Volkswagen’s one-brand motor racing season is underway again, with the first event of the 2011 Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup having been completed at Hockenheim last weekend. Driving VW Scirocco GT24s powered with biomethane, young Polish driver Mateusz Lisowski won his first race in front of Daniel Lloyd from the UK, with third place going to  the 1993 DTM champion Nicola Larini.

World NGV Speed Record in Texan’s Sights

HighMount Exploration and Production, a natural-gas-focused energy company based out of Houston, Texas, is aiming to demonstrate the full power of natural gas as a vehicle fuel as it prepares a 2007 SL600 Mercedes-Benz roadster for speed events in the US this year. Chicago-based tuning firm Speedriven says that after contesting a speed event in March the intention is to apply a natural gas conversion to the proven race technology with the intention of challenging the world speed record (364.6 k/hr) for natural gas passenger vehicles set by a converted Audi in 2009.

After its inaugural season in 2010 the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup heads into 2011 with an exciting calendar. The eco-friendly Volkswagen one-make cup  encompasses eight DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters) events with ten races including a new addition to the 2011 event schedule: the Red-Bull-Ring at Spielberg, Austria. The season opener and the finale for the biomethane-powered cars that achieve 80% CO2 emissions reduction will be held at Hockenheim.
