Powerful Tugboats Adopt LNG

Global power systems company Rolls-Royce, has signed a contract to deliver engines and propulsion systems for what is claimed to be the world’s first Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) powered tugs. The two vessels have been ordered by Norwegian company Buksér og Berging AS and will enter service in late 2013 for Statoil, the international energy company, and Gassco, the operator of the gas transportation network off the Norwegian coast.

Wärtsilä’s Acquisition of Hamworthy Enhances Marine Gas-Powered Capabilities

January 9, 2012 – 12:18 pm | Finland, Helsinki

Wärtsilä Corporation’s acquisition of Hamworthy PLC will go ahead after approval by Hamworthy’s shareholders this week. Hamworthy is a global company providing specialist equipment and services to the marine, oil & gas and industrial sectors. Wärtsilä is a global provider of complete lifecycle power solutions for the marine and energy markets, including specialization in natural gas-powered solutions. Björn Rosengren, CEO, Wärtsilä Corporation, said, “We believe strongly that by combining our resources with Hamworthy, we will be able to broaden and enhance our capabilities in rapidly evolving offshore, marine gas application, and environmental solutions markets.”

ABS Selected to Classify First Dual-Fuelled LNG Vessels in USA

Two new dual-fueled liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered offshore supply vessels (OSVs) being constructed at Trinity Offshore LLC, for New orleans based Harvey Gulf International Marine, are to be classified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), reports Marine Log. These vessels will be among the first to be classed under the ABS Guide for Propulsion and Auxiliary Systems for Gas Fuelled Ships (May 2011). Kirsi Tikka, ABS Chief Engineer, is reported as saying that “This is likely to be the beginning of a trend for OSVs in the region,”, adding that “nearly three-quarters of LNG carriers on order today will be built with dual-fuel capabilities and ABS will be classing almost half of them.”

LNG-Fuelled Chemical Tanker a First for Europe’s Inland Waterways

The MT Argonon, said to be the world’s first new LNG-fuelled tanker, has been delivered in Rotterdam to Lloyd’s Register class, heralding the start of a new era of cleaner shipping for Europe’s local waterways. The 6,100-dwt dual-fuelled chemical tanker represents a significant milestone for the Deen Shipping subsidiary, Argonon Shipping B.V., in its pursuit of cleaner transport solutions for Europe. Lloyd’s Register helped the owners and regulators to identify their risks, meet regulatory requirements and overcome the technical challenges for the precedent-setting tanker.

Masters Thesis in US Highlights Viability of Natural Gas as a Marine Fuel

A Masters of Science in Marine Engineering student at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Edward J. Eastlack, has written what the The Maritime Executive describes as a “powerful thesis” for the Masters of Science in Marine Engineering program addressing the lack of LNG fuel usage in the United States. The thesis was submitted to USMMA, Kings Point NY in August 2011. The Abstract follows.

Fjord1 Names World’s Largest LNG Ferry

Fjord1 MF BoknafjordNorwegian transport operator Fjord1 will celebrate a naming ceremony for MF Boknafjord, described as the world’s largest natural gas ferry, today. The new eco-friendly ferry, delivered by Fiskerstrand BLRT AS, will primarily serve the Arsvågen-Mortavika route on the Boknafjord in Rogaland County. The naming ceremony will take place at Fiskerstrand Shipyard in Ålesund, Western Norway, with Minister of Transport and Communications Magnhild Meltveit Kleppa as godmother.

Great Lakes Steamships May Get Natural Gas

The Great Lakes Maritime Research Institute (GLMRI), a consortium of the University of Wisconsin-Superior and the University of Minnesota-Duluth, and affiliate universities will examine whether natural gas is a practical fuel for steam-powered freighters on the Great Lakes. The consortium has received a five-year cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Transportation, Maritime Administration (MARAD), to address environmental issues that face shipping and marine transportation.

New Caterpillar Dual-Fuel Marine Engine Meets IMO and EPA Regulations

Caterpillar Marine Power Systems has developped a new marine dual-fuel engine platform for the commercial marine industry – the MaK M 46 DF. The engine boasts a power rating of 900 kW per cylinder at 500 and 514 rpm in diesel and liquefied natural gas (LNG) modes, and is available in an in-line or vee configuration. The engine is currently being tested at Caterpillar’s medium-speed engine facility in Rostock, Germany.  The M 46 DF will be manufactured in Rostock, Germany and distributed and sold through Caterpillar’s MaK dealer network. First engine deliveries are foreseen for 2014.

DNV Predicts Thousands of LNG Fuelled Ships by 2020

Det Norske Veritas AS (DNV), a global provider of risk management services with the purpose of safeguarding life, property and the environment, has spoken of the continued momentum for liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuelled shipping at a press conference at the Marintec China in Shanghai. “Increasing focus on LNG as a clean and cost effective ship fuel has brought forward initiatives throughout the shipping industry, preparing the ground for a more rapid introduction of LNG as fuel for ships in all segments,” said Mr. Remi Eriksen, COO of DNV Asia Pacific & Middle East. “We believe 500 LNG fuelled ships will be on order by 2015, several thousands by 2020,” he said.

Wärtsilä Completes First Vessel Conversion to LNG

Wärtsilä Oy has completed its first vessel conversion from heavy fuel oil to liquefied natural gas (LNG) operation. LNG fueled engines produce produce lower carbon oxide emissions and virtually no sulphur oxide or particle emissions. The vessel, the product tanker ‘Bit Viking’, is now able to qualify for lower nitrogen oxide (NOX) emission taxes under the Norwegian NOX fund scheme. Completed in October, the  ‘Bit Viking’ was handed over to the customer, Tarbit Shipping, for operation by Statoil along the Norwegian coastline.

New LNG-Powered Ferries for Tadoussac, Quebec

Norman MacMillan, Minister for Transport and responsible for the Outaouais region, and Georges Farrah, President and Chief Executive Officer of la Société des traversiers du Québec, have unveiled the design and successful technology choices in Tadoussac for the construction of two new ships for the Tadoussac–Baie-Sainte-Catherine crossing. The two new ferries, to be built in Quebec, will be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) rather than diesel. Delivery of these new ships is planned for the fall of 2013 and spring of 2014. The new vessels will have a vehicle capacity of 47% more than the current ferries.

LNG GOT, a partnership between Gothenburg Energy (GE) and the Swedish Port of Gothenburg, are engaged in an effort to introduce LNG as a fuel in Gothenburg. The goal is to contribute to the sustainable city by providing a shipfuel that is much cleaner than the fuel used today. Together, LNG GOT, Swedish Marine Technology Forum, FKAB Marine Design, Cryo AB, Det Norske Veritas AS and White Smoke AB have been working on a technology development project concerning LNG bunkering ship to ship. Out of this has come a newly released project report entitled LNG ship to ship bunkering procedure.

DSME and GL Prove Feasibility of Large LNG-fuelled Container Ships

DSME and Germanischer Lloyd (GL) have proved the feasibility of running large container vessels on LNG in a recently completed joint project. At a press conference held during the Kormarine Trade Fair in Busan, both parties announced the progress they have made towards developing LNG-fuelled large container vessels. GL has recently finished approval in Principle of a 14,000 TEU LNG-fuelled container vessel for DSME.

IBIA to Engage in LNG Fuel Issues

The International Bunker Industry Association’s (IBIA) board has taken a formal decision to “become more closely engaged in LNG matters”. The move was announced at last week’s IBIA’s Annual Convention, held in Barcelona, by its acting chief executive Trevor Harrison. He told delegates that the association would become more involved in the ongoing discussions on LNG as a fuel at the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
