Beijing Gets First 50 LNG Buses
The Beijing Public Transport Group has procured 50 Foton Motor Fukuda Europe Fai BJ6123 liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered Clean Energy Buses for operation. According to Chinese news source Hexun.com, that number is expected to grow to 100 by end-2012 and reach around 4,000 vehicles by 2015. The implementation of LNG-fuelled public transportation is the first stage of an agreement between Beijing Municipal People’s Government and Petrochina, part of state-owned oil and gas giant China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), to promote LNG as a clean energy fuel. The first buses will operate out of Xidan Station under the name of “728 Express”.

Eidesvik LNG-Powered ‘Viking Prince’ Chartered by Lundin Norway

Eidesvik Offshore ASA has entered into an agreement with independent Swedish oil and gas exploration and production company Lundin Norway AS, for chartering of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered supply vessel Viking Prince, due for delivery from Kleven Verft end of March. Viking Prince is the fifth Eidesvik Offshore vessel that is powered by LNG, with dual-fuel engines to ensure low NOx and CO2 emissions. “It is delightful to see another operator on the [Norwegian continental] shelf start using LNG powered supply vessels,” says CEO Jan Fredrik Meling.

Boeing has addressed this question by submitting a concept study in February under NASA’s N+4 generation airliners program for 2040-2050, reports Aviation Week. Considered too immature a technology for the N+3 program, NASA believed LNG to be worthy of further investigation. Boeing’s study says it can be done.

Kenworth Truck Company is expanding its line of green products by offering the Cummins Westport ISX12 G heavy duty natural gas engine for use in regional haul, vocational and refuse markets. This new engine, available early 2013, requires a single fuel source and can run on either compressed (CNG) or liquefied (LNG) natural gas, both of which are cost effective, low carbon, and low emissions fuels. The natural gas engine uses a maintenance-free, three-way catalyst and does not require a diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tank, diesel particulate filter (DPF) or selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology.

Cummins Inc. has commenced development of a 15-liter heavy-duty, spark-ignited natural gas engine to meet demand for cleaner and cheaper on-highway applications. Spanish road freight transporter Transportes Monfort S.A, based in Castellón, is switching nine of its 100-strong fleet to dual-fuel operation, operating on 20-30% diesel and 70-80% liquefied natural gas (LNG), reports El Mundo. When asked why natural gas was selected over electrical power Company representative Manuel Monfort Colom explained that “the advantages in cost, speed and range are infinitely higher in engines adapted to liquefied natural gas compared to electric battery-powered.” Monfort has opened its own CNG-LNG station to service the fleet, also accessible for public motorists.
