GASTANK Sweden Produces Lightweight CNG Cylinder to ECE R110

July 8, 2010 – 12:40 am | Sweden, Piteå and Belgium, Battice

GASTANK Sweden AB is putting HiPer-tex™ glass fibre from Belgium-based 3Bto use, producing a lightweight composite cylinder that meets the stringent ECE R110 regulation governing the use of type IV high pressure cylinders containing CNG for motor vehicles. The reduced weight of glass fibre cylinders, compared with steel cylinders, and the reduced cost, compared with carbon fibre composites, will have a “positive impact on energy consumption and CO2 emissions as CNG continues to grow as a propulsion fuel”, says Professor Kurt Berglund – President for GASTANK Sweden AB based in Piteå, Sweden. Hugues Jacquemin, CEO of 3B added: “We are very pleased to partner with GASTANK Sweden AB to develop a CNG tank that can withstand immense impacts and has extremely long term durability thanks to the high mechanical, fatigue and corrosion resistant properties of HiPer-tex™.”

GM Calls for Infrastructure to Justify Fuel Cell Vehicles

September 30, 2009 – 11:45 am | USA, Washington

General Motors Co. (GM) has put its hand up for assistance with their fuel cell program in the US, saying that Government help and industry partnerships are needed to establish hydrogen fuelling infrastructure to help create demand. A GM press release notes hydrogen-powered fuel cells are a few years away from widespread commercial use because of the need for additional investment and partnership, along with expanded availability of hydrogen fueling stations.

Xperion GMBH of Germany is establishing a global network to promote a new line of robust lightweight compressed natural gas fuel cylinders, according to a Fleets & Fuels report. Xperion’s patented hybrid composite (X-Store brand) cylinders weigh from 0.25 to 0.45 kilograms per liter. Executive VP Dietmar Müller said in a statement to F&F, “Traditionally, Type III and Type IV cylinders can cost two to three times the price of Type I steel cylinders. With our hybrid design using a weight/cost optimized ratio of high strength reinforcements, we are able to significantly reduce the extra cost associated with composite tanks.”
