GM Calls for Infrastructure to Justify Fuel Cell Vehicles

September 30, 2009 – 11:45 am | USA, Washington

General Motors Co. (GM) has put its hand up for assistance with their fuel cell program in the US, saying that Government help and industry partnerships are needed to establish hydrogen fuelling infrastructure to help create demand. A GM press release notes hydrogen-powered fuel cells are a few years away from widespread commercial use because of the need for additional investment and partnership, along with expanded availability of hydrogen fueling stations.

US DOE Looks for ‘Breakthrough’ Hydrogen Storage Solution

September 18, 2009 – 10:47 pm | USA

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has determined that the next H-Prize will be awarded in the area of storage materials in mobile systems for light-duty vehicles. Lack of a suitable storage material has been identified as major factor limiting hydrogen-fueled vehicle commercialization. The H-Prize, enacted by Congress, authorized the Secretary of Energy to create a program to competitively award cash prizes that will advance the commercial application of hydrogen energy technologies by dramatizing and incentivizing accelerated research.

Xperion GMBH of Germany is establishing a global network to promote a new line of robust lightweight compressed natural gas fuel cylinders, according to a Fleets & Fuels report. Xperion’s patented hybrid composite (X-Store brand) cylinders weigh from 0.25 to 0.45 kilograms per liter. Executive VP Dietmar Müller said in a statement to F&F, “Traditionally, Type III and Type IV cylinders can cost two to three times the price of Type I steel cylinders. With our hybrid design using a weight/cost optimized ratio of high strength reinforcements, we are able to significantly reduce the extra cost associated with composite tanks.”
