NGVAmerica’s Summit-Conference, held in Boston last week, has confirmed upbeat sentiment amongst industry members with almost universal agreement that the industry is on the verge of a tipping point which should see vehicle and fuelling station numbers increase dramatically in coming years. More than 150 delegates attended a series of meetings and sessions over the three day event with some in-house meetings attracting standing room only crowds. Attending NGV Global executive director, Brett Jarman, described the atmosphere as enthusiastic, positive and forward looking. Following are some of the NGV related highlights from Fleets and Fuel’s Showtime News, published for the WasteCon Exhibition held immediately after the Summit:

Education the Key to NGV Take-up in Australia, Not Technology
SAE-Australasia’s first two-day conference, held in Melbourne, has highlighted the need for selling the message about the efficiencies and environmental benefits available to fleets and private users, through the adoption of natural gas as a fuel for transportation. Tony McMullan of Australia’s Truck Industry Council quoted Professor David Cebon, an Australian academic and engineer from Cambridge University, who said that as an industry we do not have a technical problem we have a marketing problem. SAE will renew its focus on educating the public and then going to government and identifying policy that will assist in the greater acceptance and take up of gaseous fuels, seen as a key role for SAE-A.
AFVi Survey: Adopting Alternative Fuel Vehicles is Top Strategy – Natural Gas Dominant Preference

At 34%, natural gas dominates survey responses.
The Alternative Fuel Vehicle Institute, which organized the Alternative Fuels & Vehicles National Conference + Expo 2010, has released the results of a survey, in which participants were asked about one policy or initiative that their company is using to green their fleet. 89% said incorporating, expanding and/or replacing existing vehicles with “alternative fuel vehicles” is their top strategy. Of those that indicated a preferred fuel type, natural gas was the dominant preference, attracting 34% of respondents ahead of 6 other fuels.

NGV 2010: Change the Perception

OEMs in Rome included Mercedes, Fiat, Opel and Volkswagen
Creating a Revolution in Transport may have been the theme for this year’s natural gas vehicle conference in Rome, but another recurring theme has emerged from presentations. Persistently, “perception is reality” has been reiterated – the perception that natural gas is short term, inefficient, unsafe, and non-renewable has to change. It isn’t any of those things, and by all accounts it is becoming a viable primary fuel, not an alternative fuel, and will be here for many years to come.

Dual-Fuel (Gaseous/Diesel) Engine Pathway to Market – Workshop Outcomes
Emissions performance and economics are critical to making dual-fuel engines a market success
Outcomes and proceedings have been released from the Clean Fuels Consulting Critical Issues Workshop Dual-fuel(Gaseous/Diesel) Engines: Challenges, Opportunities and Strategies to Build the Market. The workshop gathered 75 natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) stakeholders from 17 countries and four continents to evaluate the technical, economic, marketing and regulatory trends related to natural gas/LPG-diesel engines. In two-half days of presentations and discussion, the group identified possible requirements to bring these technologies to the market and identified a strategic path to help foster the development of a regulatory framework to certify dual-fuel gaseous engine systems for both original equipment manufactured (OEM) engines and retrofit applications. Participants included system designers and suppliers, OEMs, the European Commission, national government representatives, emissions experts and related stakeholders. The workshop was held in Brussels on 30-31st March 2010.

Zietlow Reaches Panamericana Halfway Point
After crossing the Mexico-US border on February 25 Rainer Zietlow, champion of the long-distance natural-gas drive, is now cruising the long way across the USA before heading north to Alaska. Turning right across Texas, the journey has ventured east for a circuit of Florida, north to New York and Detroit, then continued south-west through Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas (again) and Utah. Zietlow and his crew are now in Los Angeles, California, a symbolic halfway point of the journey, with their trusty VW Caddy Maxi Ecofuel. Their goal is to drive from Tierra del Fuego to Barrow, Alaska using only compressed natural gas from local fuelling stations.
