India, Calcutta
Calcutta could join
India’s growing list of CNG fuelled cities with the news that the city
may have a natural gas pipeline and network within 3 years.
Telegraph India reports that GAIL India Ltd will build a 30 billion
rupee ($US690 million) 840 km pipeline to the city from Uttar Pradesh
to Haldia, by 2008. An additional 5 billion rupees ($US110 million)
will be spent on the city network.
The press reports quote Gail India chairman Proshanto Banerjee as
saying that the company will establish a joint venture project to
establish 50 CNG stations in the city.
Calcutta is one of several Indian cities that have missed a number of
Supreme Court deadlines to make CNG available for transport use. To
date the city has been hamstrung by the lack of available natural gas
supplies.
