A new study — Gas for Climate : How gas can help to achieve the Paris Agreement target in an affordable way — published by the Gas for Climate initiative, sets out a plan to meet the Paris Agreement target in a cost-effective way. It focuses on using renewable gas in existing gas infrastructure for the heating of buildings, to produce dispatchable electricity as a complement to wind and solar, and to fuel heavy transport. Two Case Studies released by the US Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory and the sustainable energy NGO Energy Vision highlight the environmental and economic benefits of generating transportation fuel from bio-waste. The studies focus on two successful projects that were among the first to produce Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) vehicle fuel using anaerobic digesters to capture biogases from decomposing organic waste. The International Gas Union (IGU) draws much optimism from the report which cites the “strong environmental dimension” in the case for natural gas and lauds natural gas’ “multiple roles across the energy system that no other fuel or technology can match”.
