Natural gas sales in Switzerland increased nearly 12 percent in 2010, in part due to the more widespread use of natural gas and biomethane for vehicle fuel. This fuel displaced an equivalent amount of 22 million liters of gasoline, an increase of 18.4% over the previous year. The biogas proportion was 20%. The number of CNG vehicles rose within a year to around 9,600. The service station network in Switzerland now includes 126 stations.
The average cost of Swiss natural gas / biomethane at filling stations is about 30 percent cheaper than gasoline. Natural gas / biogas currently offers the most environmentally friendly technology in standard production vehicles with internal combustion engine.
