Casais y Cía S.L., a Spanish company specialising in the national and international transport of food, has set about transforming its fleet to cleaner operations by acquiring 18 Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) -powered IVECO Stralis NP 400.
The Galician company shares with IVECO the commitment to sustainable transport and is committed to the use of alternative fuels, such as natural gas. The delivery of the vehicles was carried out in the facilities of Inturasa in the headquarters of A Coruña, official dealer of IVECO in Galicia.
The IVECO Stralis NP 400, which is produced exclusively at the IVECO plant in Madrid, has won the ‘Truck of the Year’ award at the 2017 National Transportation Awards and the “Low Carbon Truck of the Year” at the Commercial Fleet Awards.
“It considerably reduces greenhouse gases, the consumption of these vehicles with LNG engines is lower, as well as the noise of the engine is much lower,” said Valentin Alfonsin Somoza, manager of Casais y Cia SL. He explained the decision to renew the fleet with IVECO natural gas vehicles has been based on two factors: the high instability of the price of diesel and the greater price and legal stability offered by natural gas.
The fleet operator notes Europe’s intentions to drive down emissions of polluting gases which it foresees will be implemented more quickly. It anticipates greater restrictions on high polluting vehicles such as those using diesel and an increase in the taxation of gas oil, greatly penalizing the use of traditional vehicles. “In addition, it provides added value for our customers by contributing to reducing pollution in their production processes, does not need the complicated systems of post-treatment of diesel such as SCR, EGR, DPF, and without AdBlue, and the possibilities of fuel theft so common nowadays they are totally reduced,” said Alfonsin.
The IVECO Stralis NP 400 of liquefied natural gas (LNG) is powered by an IVECO Cursor 9 engine of Euro VI 8.7 liters natural gas that develops a power of 400cv and a maximum torque of 1,700 Nm. The Stralis NP is also the first natural gas truck with 12-speed automatic transmission, thanks to the automated transmission, which guarantees lower fuel consumption and greater driving comfort. The higher capacity fuel tanks increase the autonomy with the LNG-only version, which reaches a record distance of 1,500 km.
Currently in Spain there are 51 public refueling points of CNG and 31 of LNG, which makes it the European country with more stations for liquefied natural gas, to which will be added throughout this year, 34 CNG stations and 21 more than LNG.
