Republicb Services-driver-at-cng-fueling-stationRepublic Services, an industry leader in U.S. recycling and non-hazardous solid waste, has celebrated Earth Day by unveiling a new compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station and adding 22 new CNG-powered trucks to serve customers of Daly City in California. The new CNG trucks replace older diesel-powered trucks in the Company’s fleet.

“We are leveraging alternative fuels and fleet innovation to help preserve our Blue Planet, and we believe we have a responsibility to lead by example, with a commitment to reduce carbon emissions whenever possible,” said Mike Mahoney, general manager at Republic Services.

Republic operates a total of 30 collection vehicles supporting Daly City, the Town of Colma and Open Market areas of San Mateo County. More than 80 percent of Republic’s fleet serving the area powered by the domestic natural gas fuel source. Clean Energy Fuels (an NGV Global Corporate Sponsor) designed and built the CNG fueling station.

“We are proud to partner with them on converting their fleet to natural gas and building a CNG fueling station, which ties in perfectly with our City’s sustainability goals,” said Daly City Mayor Glenn Sylvester.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), each new CNG collection truck deployed is equivalent to planting over 600 mature trees each year. Based on EPA calculations, the carbon emissions reduction benefits from Republic’s CNG powered fleet in Daly City is equivalent to planting 13,200 mature trees annually.

Nationwide, Republic operates a fleet of more than 2,500 CNG vehicles and 38 natural gas fueling stations. Republic’s CNG fleet helps to save roughly 18 million gallons of diesel fuel annually. As the operator of the 8th largest vocational fleet in the country, Republic has a number of initiatives to reduce overall fuel usage, including its continued commitment to operating CNG powered trucks. Together, these initiatives will help Republic reach its goal of reducing fleet greenhouse gas emissions by three percent by 2018.

Known as the Blue Planet™ sustainability initiative, Republic is defining its approach to environmental responsibility through decreased vehicle emissions, innovative landfill technologies, use of renewable energy, community engagement and employee growth opportunities.
