The major cities of northern Peru are in the process of acquiring natural gas for transportation, domestic and industrial applications following an inauguration ceremony for Liquefied Natural Gas supply in the city of Trujillo. The gas concession, which will take five years to roll out, will also reach the cities of Chimbote, Huaraz, Pacasmayo, Cajamarca, Chiclayo and Lambayeque.
In a ceremony held in Trujillo, which was attended by the President of the Republic, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, the Minister of Energy and Mines, Cayetana Aljovín and the regional governor of La Libertad, Luis Valdez Farías; the service of liquefied natural gas (LNG) was initiated that will benefit thousands of users in the regions of La Libertad, Áncash, Cajamarca and Lambayeque through the provision of a safe, continuous and economic fuel.
The commercial start-up of the project marks a new milestone in the change of the country’s energy matrix. For this, gas supplier Quavii has installed more than 241 kilometers of distribution networks in Chicago, Vista Bella, Vista Alegre, Santo Dominguito, El Bosque, La Noria, Santa Rosalia, El Palomar, Urb Puerta del Sol, Sol de Oro, Aranjuez and other districts of Trujillo, which will allow 51,764 connections in Trujillo between homes, businesses, industries and vehicles.
Alberto Polifroni, Manager General of Quavii (a subsidiary of Promigas), said US $51 million has thus far been invested in the project out of a total of US $200 million committed for the first 5 years of the concession.
According to Promigas, the gas will be transported through tanker trucks, with a capacity of 50 cubic meters of LNG , to each of the seven regasification stations located in each city to be distributed to the end user through the distribution networks.
“The arrival of natural gas to Trujillo represents the beginning of a permanent, safe, responsible and efficient service with which many families will be able to live better saving more and with the possibility of having a more comfortable life, safe and in tune with the care of the environment,” said the Quavii executive.
Benefits of natural gas
With the arrival of natural gas in the regions, families will have access to a better quality of life, since they will be able to enjoy an economic resource, having significant savings in comparison with other fuels such as LPG; safe, since, being lighter than air, it does not accumulate in spaces and dissipates easily in case of leaks; clean, that does not generate ash, fumes or gases that pollute the air and affect the health of people; and a continuous supply, being available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
