Freightliner Trucks has produced its first road tractors powered by the Cummins ISL G Near Zero (NZ) NOX natural gas engine. The Freightliner M2 112 is one of the nine trucks ordered by Mountain Valley Express of Stockton, California.
“Mountain Valley Express is pleased to be taking delivery of the first production NZ emission LNG-powered M2 Freightliner tractors,” said Scott Blevins, president of Mountain Valley Express. “They will be placed into service within the San Joachin Valley and Bay Area of Northern California. We have come to rely on the Freightliner Trucks, along with the Cummins engine and Allison transmission components.”
The Cummins ISL G NZ NOX natural gas engine is the first MidRange engine in North America to receive emission certifications from both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Air Resources Board (ARB) in California for meeting the 0.02 g/bhp-hr optional Near Zero NOXEmissions standards for medium-duty truck, urban bus, school bus, and refuse applications. This engine operates on 100 percent natural gas and is compatible with compressed (CNG), liquefied (LNG), and renewable natural gas (RNG).
“With the Cummins Westport natural gas engine being certified to the California ARB Optional Low NOX emission standard of 0.02 g/bhp-hr, these are the cleanest Class 8 commercial vehicles ever built and delivered,” said Robert Carrick, natural gas sales manager at Daimler Trucks North America. “These trucks are fueled with low-carbon renewable natural gas, and according to the California Energy Commission, they have emissions near or equal to those of near zero emission electric vehicles.”
Vocational truck market leader Freightliner’s collaboration with Cummins Westport to bring the first affordable, commercially viable, natural-gas heavy-duty truck that can meet electric vehicle emission levels to market is the latest example of the company’s mission to continually invest in and improve upon its portfolio of environmentally friendly truck options.
Freightliner Trucks is a division of Daimler Trucks North America LLC, headquartered in Portland, Oregon. It produces and markets Class 4-8 trucks and is a Daimler company.
