CNG-Powered Oshkosh S-Series Front Discharge Mixer

Freightliner Trucks, a division of Daimler Trucks North America LLC, has joined with McNeilus, an Oshkosh Corporation Company, to showcase the first 114SD concrete mixer with compressed natural gas (CNG) technology at last week’s World of Concrete event in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 114SD CNG concrete mixer is equipped with the Cummins Westport ISL G 8.9 liter natural gas engine with 320 horsepower, which operates with near-zero emissions.

Built on Freightliner’s severe duty platform and designed for a variety of applications, the 114SD CNG concrete mixer is available in a wide range of vocational rear suspensions and frame options up to 5 million RBM (Resisting Bending Moment). Freightliner Trucks collaborated with McNeilus, an Oshkosh Corporation Company, to build the truck. Upon completion of the exposition, McNeilus will deliver the vehicle to Action Ready Mix Concrete located in Bohemia, NY.

“The combination of our severe duty concrete mixer with natural gas technology is the ideal blend of power, performance and efficiency,” said Robert Carrick, manager, Natural gas sales, Freightliner Trucks. “We are providing the mixer market with another solution for customers seeking an economical way to reduce emissions and fuel costs.”

“We’ve been manufacturing CNG-powered commercial vehicles since 2006, and we understand how to help ready-mixed producers take advantages of new technology,” said Frank Busicchia, McNeilus Companies vice president of sales. “Cleaner burning and quieter running engines, lower fuel costs, and an abundant domestic supply add up to bottom-line results that make CNG a smart choice for both front discharge and rear discharge fleets.”

McNeilus supplies the truck with an 11-cubic yard McNeilus drum with a 45-inch opening. The Oshkosh transfer case and proprietary axles were developed for military vehicles, and the vehicle’s patented Load Span Tag Axle (LSTA) features a hydraulic system with a higher weight rating than other tag axles.
