Union Gas Limited, a major Canadian natural gas storage, transmission and distribution company based in Ontario, launched its Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fuelling station this week at its London office. The company used the event to highlight the importance of CNG as a better choice for Ontario cities and local economies to fuel fleet and heavy transportation vehicles.
Currently operating, Union Gas’ CNG station fuels six trucks in its fleet with plans to convert more trucks to CNG over the next few years in an effort to reduce emissions and lower fuel and maintenance costs.
“Increasing CNG penetration in our fleet has many benefits and conversion quickly pays for itself,” said Mike Shannon, vice-president, distribution operations, Union Gas. “But more importantly, CNG has the potential to benefit the broader provincial economy as it looks for economic solutions to reduce carbon, lower emissions and remain competitive.”
CNG is the cleanest burning transportation fuel on the market today. It is cleaner than petroleum based products and produces the fewest emissions of all other fuels and contains significantly less pollutants than diesel. These environmental attributes make it the ideal fuel to displace dirtier burning diesel from the transportation sector which is one of the largest source of carbon emissions in Ontario.
“As a city we are committed to tackling climate change and collaborations with companies such as Union Gas will help us achieve our goals,” said London Mayor Matt Brown. “I am so pleased to see Union Gas begin to convert their fleet and lend a hand to London as we work towards becoming a greener city.”
CNG is the smart and affordable choice for fleet vehicles, transit buses, school buses, waste disposal trucks, delivery vehicles, and more. With CNG, municipalities and businesses can save on fuel costs, reduce emission levels, and see vehicle life extended. As Ontario implements the Climate Change Action Plan natural gas will provide many opportunities to contribute to a more energy-efficient and prosperous low-carbon economy.
