Globally, natural gas mobility is an evolving industry that continues to thrive, expand and consolidate despite market challenges. Natural gas vehicles (NGV) operate in more than 80 countries and natural gas propulsion is taking vessels along inland waterways and across oceans. Regulations and standards are a vital component of this industry.
Such is the context in which several documents were tabled at the UNECE Group of Experts on General Safety (GRSG) meeting on 10-13 April 2018 in Geneva. NGV Global was in attendance to ensure the best interests of the worldwide natural gas for transportation industry were kept to the fore. Discussed were proposed changes to UNECE R.110 (CNG/LNG Vehicles) including CNG cylinder inspections, and expansion to applications for on-board vehicle appliances. Read more »

Netherlands’ Publicatiereeks Gevaarlijke Stoffen (PGS, tr. Hazardous Substances Publication Series) has drafted a national safety guideline covering safe procedures for CNG and LNG vehicles (PGS 26). The document is formulated according to ‘Nieuwe Stijl’ (tr. New Style) guidelines which convert existing PGS publications into a format consistent with the Netherland’s 2018 Environmental Act. Every two years, CEN and CENELEC (the European standardization organizations) distinguish presidents and secretaries of technical committees who have made an exceptional contribution to standardization in Europe. On 6 December 2017, the ‘Pin Award 2017 Ceremony’ took place at the new premises of the CEN-CENELEC Management Center in Brussels. Swedish trade associations Energigas Sweden and BIL Sweden have issued a press release addressing media reports that infer a disproportionately high number of accidents for vehicles powered by natural gas, supposedly due to lower safety thresholds. “That’s not right,” they say, emphasizing security issues are always top priority for the natural gas vehicle (NGV) sector. Mr Sergio Mujica has taken up his appointment as new Secretary-General (CEO) of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), having spent 7 years at the World Custom’s Organization (WCO) as Deputy Secretary-General.
