Biomethane Train Begins Commercial Operations

October 28, 2005

Commercial operations have begun on what’s believed to be the world’s
first train operating on biomethane. Trial operations commenced in
June, with the train running on two Volvo natural gas bus engines,
replacing two previously fitted diesel engines.

Gas for the train is sourced from a sewage water treatment plant in
Västervik, one of the destination cities on the 80 km route. The train
has a top speed of 130km/h (80mph) and can travel 600km (372 miles)
before it needs to refuel. Svensk Biogas disclosed earlier this year
that 10 million kronor (1.08m euros; $US1.3m) was spent on development.
