A first demonstration report entitled “Draft Demonstration Report on Fuel Stations Including Deployment Strategies and Regulatory Requirements“, carried out by GDF-SUEZ partner of the Biogasmax project, on fuel stations including deployment strategies and regulatory requirements has been released by Biogasmax. Demonstration sites such as Lille (France), Bern (Switzerland), Göteborg and Stockholm (Sweden) are described, regarding gas supply, compression and storage facilities and distribution modes. Technical, environmental and economic factors for biomethane fuelling stations have been assessed. A final report is expected in September 2010.

Biogasmax says the majority of biomethane vehicles fill their tanks from a fuelling station dedicated to biomethane, often close to production sites. This makes economic sense when fleets are small, particularly if they are captive fleets operating as part of the waste collection, servicing and distribution cycle. With increasing number of biomethane vehicles, the need for extended fuelling capacity and infrastructure is required.

When injection into the grid is not feasible, this issue can be solved either by the implementation of large-scale storage and fuelling facilities near the production site (Stockholm, Vasteras), or by moving the fleet depot to this location. This can be also achieved by applying alternative methods of distributing upgraded biogas to vehicle fuelling sites in a safe, efficient and cost effective manner. This study has analysed all these different issues, following three steps. Firstly, distribution sites have been described (national and local contexts, regulatory equipment, investments needed, public authorities role…). Secondly, criteria for setting up new filling stations have been identified in the aim to help new biomethane projects in their development. Further analysis, including a European perspective, will be achieved in the final version that will be published in September 2010.

The BIOGASMAX project is made up of 8 work packages (WP), each one having its own objectives. This document is dedicated to task 4.1, studying the “concepts for fuelling station infrastructure”. The main aim of this task is to demonstrate various distribution techniques, both dedicated to biogas and those where biogas is combined with natural gas fuelling.

The draft document is a deliverable of the subtask 4.1.4, included in WP4. The objectives of this WP4 are:

  • Ensure good availability of biogas for transport use through building and extending of biogas filling station infrastructure;
  • Enhance knowledge of optimised ways for non-grid distribution of biogas for transport use;
  • Demonstrate optimised ways for grid injection of biogas in natural gas grids;
  • Ensure good valorisation of results from grid-injection demonstrators.
