Twelve Iveco Irisbus buses, delivered to Mallorca in the Balearic Islands at the end of December 2009, are the first buses on the islands to operate on compressed natural gas. Ten of the twelve buses are Citelis ground floor urban CNG 12m models, while the other two are Citelis ground floor urban CNG 18m units. The 26-seat 12-m buses are equipped with 272 hp EEV Iveco Cursor 8 engines. The 310 hp EEV 41-seat 18-m buses have Iveco Cursor 8 engines.
Purchased with finance provided by the Government of the Balearic Islands, the CNG buses will be operated by Empresa Municipal de Transports Urbans de Palma de Mallorca S.A. (EMT) as a pilot project and possible prelude to further natural gas vehicle purchases. They will refuel at filling stations recently constructed by Endesa.
Natural gas as a cleaner fuel, provides for cleaner cities, an attractive proposition for this popular tourist destination. Compared with diesel, the reduction of pollutant emissions is significant: carbon monoxide by 25%, particulate by 81%, nitrogen oxide by 92% and non-metallic mineral oils by 63%.
The Irisbus Iveco CNG EEV engines exceed current European regulations for emission levels and are said to already meet 2014 emission levels. The natural gas engines are specifically designed to operate with less noise and less vibration compared to diesel-powered buses. The performances of these engines are similar to diesel-powered engines.
