Compressed natural gas (CNG) stations are producing spin off benefits in the form of carbon credits for China Gas Holdings Ltd. The company’s Chief Financial Officer Eric Leung told Bloomberg News that the company is building 120 CNG stations in 30 cities over the next two and half years and will make use of United Nation’s Clean Development Mechanisms to earn credits for the stations.

Chuncheon Gets Taste of Things to Come With ANGVA Green Highway
South Korea’s Chuncheon City has had a small taste of natural gas vehicle fever ahead of the city’s hosting of the IANGV NGV 2012 Conference and Exhibition. The city was host last month to the commencement of the final leg of the ANGVA Green Highway rally, en route to Donghae for the ANGVA 2009 Conference and Exhibition. Though a relative newcomer to the natural gas vehicle scene, Chuncheon has embraced the concept since first winning their early bid to host NGV 2012 back in 2006. In the subsequent period the city has seen the installation of two compressed natural gas (CNG) filling stations and more than 200 CNG vehicles operating on the city’s roads.

10 New CNG Iveco Dailys for TNT Swiss Post
TNT Swiss Post, a company jointly established by TNT Express and Swiss Post International, has increased the natural gas vehicle (NGV) count in the Geneva region, adding ten new compressed natural gas (CNG) powered Iveco Daily Turbo vans last month to their fleet. Erdgasfahren reports the CNG Iveco performs as well as the diesel equivalent Thus, the Iveco Daily CNG Turbo performs on a par with the diesel equivalent model but has attained Environmentally Enhanced Vehicle (EEV) status under Euro 5 emissions norms due to its low emissions. With Switzerland being a significant user of biogas in its distribution networks, the 10 Ivecos are expected to reduce CO2 emissions by around 5 tonnes per annum relative to diesel equivalents.
Dallas Fort Worth Airport Implements Natural Gas Taxi Policy
The Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) International Airport has instituted a new policy to further incentivize the use of natural gas taxis. Effective immediately, natural gas-powered taxicabs will be first in line for fares at DFW. The policy was approved by the DFW Board to help improve North Texas’ air quality and reduce dependence on foreign oil. Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert, an airport board member, said the region’s air quality barely meets federal standards and, if the region’s natural growth pushes North Texas over the limits, its federal highway and transportation money could be lost. “The worst possible choice we could make here is to do nothing,” said Leppert, who is pushing to convert Dallas’ taxicabs to CNG and who endorsed the recent Dallas Area Rapid Transit decision to buy 600 CNG buses.
US National Academy of Sciences Report Highlights Benefits of NGVs
Electric and plug-in electric vehicles worse than gasoline on emissions pollutants
Last month, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) released a report that attempts to evaluate the externalities associated with energy production and use in the U.S. The report, entitled Hidden Costs of Energy: Unpriced Consequences of Energy Production and Use, was prepared at the request of the U.S. Congress. It analyzes different energy sectors and develops cost estimates for damages associated with criteria pollution as well as greenhouse gas emissions. The report did not quantify costs associated with energy security. For transportation, the results are presented in terms of the cost per vehicle mile traveled. Supporting data is presented in terms of grams of pollution per mile largely using the Argonne Laboratories GREET model. The assessment includes a review of the full fuel cycle emissions of different transportation fuels as well as the energy and fuel use associated with manufacturing different vehicle types.

NGV Sessions at World Gas Conference – Study Group Report Released
Natural gas vehicles (NGVs) took a proactive role, featuring in two sessions at this week’s International Gas Union’s (IGU) triennial World Gas Conference (WGC 2009) held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The conference is a highlight of the world gas industry calendar, attracting 3,000 NGV utility and other delegates from all around the world. With Argentina the second ranked country worldwide in terms of natural gas vehicles (home to 1.7 million NGVs), Buenos Aires formed a fitting backdrop to the sessions, the first featuring the release of a three year 142 page study group report on natural gas vehicles, and the second a Strategic Panel chaired by IANGV President Rich Kolodziej.

IGU Releases Strategic Statement Ahead of WGC 2009
In the lead up to next month’s World Gas Conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the International Gas Union (IGU) has released a Strategic Statement outlining the role of natural gas in providing a sustainable energy future. The strategic statement positions natural gas as “the cleanest, most efficient and versatile of the fossil fuels, making it a unique choice to complement renewable energies in the path towards a sustainable future”, stating further that “other technology developments such as those enabling the capture and sequestration of CO2 also support the choice of natural gas.” As an affiliated organization of the IANGV, the IGU is playing a key role in growing the natural gas vehicle industry worldwide. Next month’s World Gas Congress will include 2 sessions dedicated to natural gas vehicles, one being the release of a report from the IGU 5.3 Study Group, “Global Opportunities for Natural Gas as a Transportation Fuel for Today and Tomorrow” and the other a Strategic Panel chaired by IANGV President, Rich Kolodziej. The study group report follows a similar report released by the group at WGC 2006 in Amsterdam.
Methane to Markets – Project Assistance Opportunity
Are you seeking technical assistance, financial support, or consultation for a methane recovery or use project? If so, then the March 2010 Partnership Expo in New Delhi, India is an appropriate venue for you to showcase your project opportunity! Several featured projects at the 2007 Methane to Markets Partnership Expo in Beijing received inquiries from project developers and/or financiers – there is good reason to expect that the same will happen in 2010. At that event a dedicated poster area showcased project opportunities from all sectors – these are featured on the Methane to Markets Web site at: http://www.methanetomarkets.org/events/2007/all/expoprojects.htm.

Canada Claims First Hydrogen Tank Standard, B51 Allows Composite Tanks in Fueling Stations
The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) is expected to publish its
first hydrogen vehicle fuel tank standard, B51, later this year. The
CSA has developed the B51 standard based on existing compressed natural
gas (CNG) standards and will pave the way to establish 700 bar (10,000
psi) H2 fueling stations in time for the 2010 Winter Olympics in
Vancouver. More information, Fleets & Fuels, (Click here for

Emissions Solutions to Release New Engines
Fleets & Fuels reports that Texas based, Emissions Solutions Inc
(ESI) is in the final stages of EPA and CARB certification for its
‘Phoenix’ 7.6 litre, 175-265 horsepower natural gas engine. The engine
is based on the International (Navistar) DT 466 engines, for which ESI
will be offering an engine swap conversion program. Target markets
include short-haul transportation and distribution applications such as
school buses, food and beverage fleets and in the municipal work truck
sector. More information, Fleets & Fuels, (Click here for IANGV member discount subscriptions).

Iranian CNG Revolution Continues – 1.5 Million NGVs and Growing
IRAN CNG Conference 2009
Despite political uncertainties in Iran, one good news story to come out of the Islamic Republic is the continued success of the country’s extensive natural gas vehicle (NGV) program. Attending last week’s 2nd Conference and Exhibition on CNG and Related Industries provided a valuable opportunity to gain insight into the world’s fastest growing NGV market. As could be expected, the massive growth does present some problems for the industry but, while the scale of the issues might be larger, the problems themselves are not unique to Iran and are not insurmountable. In fact, the national NGV industry is setting new benchmarks that put others on notice. A quick look at some numbers might help set the scene…
