The Sebel, Melbourne, Australia, September 15
Frustrated by the lack of action with natural gas as a transport fuel in Australia, the local Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) is taking matters into their own hands, convening a Gaseous Fuels Technology Conference in Melbourne to stimulate interest and further understanding of the benefits of gaseous fuels such as compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG) and LPG. With LPG already well used in Australia, the day long program is to feature several speakers covering issues such as technology, fleet trials, cost and fuel supplies.
Executive Director of SAE, David Ryan said in a statement, “With Australia’s abundant reserves of natural gas, it is becomming apparent that CNG and LNG will play and important and increasing role in our transport industry. With local CNG supply it is possible for Australia to reduce it’s dependence on imported fuel and with over 5 million CNG vehicles in the world today, this is not a fuel still requiring development, it is ready now and just needs to be embraced.  With the environment and cost of fuel being big issues today, natural gas has the ability to provide a viable alternative for Australia’s transport needs”
The program features former Director of Innovation at General Motors Australia, Dr Laurie Sparke, who was quoted earlier this year in support of natural gas vehicles, particularly for freight and heavy vehicle applications. Other speakers or panel members include Senior Vice President of the IANGV, Sean Blythe, NGV industry safety and standards expert Dr Hien Ly, Simon Humphries (Isuzu GM), Mark Dunn (Wesport Innovations), Brad Lowson (WesfarmersKleenheat) & Gary Ireson (International Energy Services).
