Reducing fuel consumption and emissions a priority
40 new CNG stations planned
Work commences on natural gas vehicle conversions
AT&T has released it 2008 Citizenship and Sustainability Report, titled Connecting for a Sustainable Future, announcing that the company has made progress on measuring corporate-wide CO2 emissions and determining base lines. As a result, AT&T plans to disclose its domestic carbon footprint by the end of 2009 (see page 15 of report). The report is for the first time aligned with the Global Reporting Initiative’s (GRI) G3 Guidelines, which provides a framework for organizations to report on their social, environmental and economic performance.
The report states, “AT&T operates one of the largest commercial fleets in the United States with about 85,000 vehicles. We recognize the economic and environmental implications of maintaining a fleet that size — which is why reducing fuel consumption and emissions is an ongoing priority and challenge for us. Finding cleaner, more efficient methods of powering our fleet is one of the most important steps we can take.”
Over the course of 2008, AT&T rolled out 105 AFVs in more than 30 cities across 17 states, conserving nearly 34,395 gallons of fuel in 2008 and reducing CO2 emissions by more than 300 metric tons, according to the U.S. EPA Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator.
Subsequently the company has determined on-term goals that include expansion of their alternative fuel fleet to 15,000 vehicles (18% of total fleet), of which approximately 8,000 will be powered by compressed natural gas. As reported previouslyin NGV Global Dallas-based BAF Technologies has commenced converting Ford E-Series vans, purchased by AT&T, to CNG technology.
AT&T will work with natural gas service providers to build up to 40 new CNG fueling stations across its operating region to provide the fueling infrastructure needed for the new vehicles.
