50th & 1000th NGV – Same Car, Different Celebrations

May 15, 2008

VW Caddy CNG IEK
Germany, Leipzig

Tool manufacturer Leitz GmbH & Co has celebrated the purchase of its 50th natural gas powered Volkswagen. The purchase of the VW Caddy EcoFuel was made with the financial support of the Initiativkreis Erdgas als Kraftstoff (IEK) – the Initiative for Natural Gas Fuel association. The IEK has now supported the purchase of 60 natural gas vehicles (NGVs) for Leitz. By year’s end, the Leitz group wants to have 80 NGVs, making up more than one third of all vehicles in the company’s fleet.

Concidentally, on 14 May, under the IEK "national fleet support"
initiative the fiftieth Volkswagen Caddy EcoFuel purchased by Leitz
also became the 1000th NGV purchase supported by IEK. IEK has
represented companies in the German gas industry for the use of natural
gas in the transport sector since 2004, with a major focus on funding
NGVs through sale or lease. The association has extended its offer of support to
the end of 2008 with the aim of adding yet another 1000 NGVs to the
transport sector.

Even without financial support NGVs are becoming increasingly popular
in Germany: around 70,000 natural gas vehicles are currently registered
with about 800 filling stations throughout the country.
