Fuel Systems Solutions Completes Fuelmaker Acquisition

May 29, 2009 – 11:13 pm

USA, Santa Ana, CA

Fuel Systems Solutions Completes Acquisition of Certain FuelMaker Assets and Purchase Orders

Fuel Systems Solutions, Inc. (FSYS) has completed the purchase of selected assets and technology for compressed natural gas (CNG) refueling products manufactured by FuelMaker Corporation, including the home refueling appliance marketed under the Phill(tm) brand, for $7.0 million as announced on May 1st. Manufacturing and service are to be relocated to Italy but the company has stated a committment to “fulfill certain FuelMaker service obligations and has assumed certain outstanding purchase orders”.

In a press release, Mariano Costamagna, CEO of Fuel Systems Solutions, said, “We are excited to begin integrating our new technology, patents, certifications and products with our turn-key refueling equipment solutions. Naturally, we expect a transition period during which we will transfer certifications and production; however, management is committed to the continuity of service and production of Phill.”

“Over the past two years, we have selectively acquired complementary businesses that support our business and broaden our opportunity. Our existing refueling solutions for large fleets and gas stations are augmented by the FuelMaker product line, which addresses both the consumer and smaller commercial markets. We are excited to continue to market and service Phill, which we believe we can deploy to existing markets using our global distribution network and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) relationships and to developing markets where the natural gas refueling infrastructure is limited, such as the United States.”

Those with inquiries about FuelMaker and Phill, please email sales@impcotechnologies.com or call (714) 656-1268 in North America or +39 (0172) 48681 outside of North America. Investors please continue to call LHA at (415) 433-3777.

LNG Refuellers Plant - Tasmania

“We have the gas here; the plant is the missing link.”

A clean and local alternative fuel supply forms the basis of a new proposal presented to industry leaders and transport operators in Australia’s South West Victoria, put together by industrial gas company BOC, the South West Sustainability Partnership and regional transport companies. The $150 million (USD $115 million) project calls for the establishment of a micro liquified natural gas (LNG) plant and up to six refuelling stations that will form a commercial pipeline-to-truck network for more than 120 heavy duty vehicles.

A Logistics magazine article states the proposed plant would have the capacity to produce 50 tonnes of LNG a day, the equivalent of 70,000 litres of conventional diesel.

South West Sustainability Partnership Executive Officer, Barrie Baker, and BOC General Manager LNG, Alex Dronoff, recently met industry leaders in Warrnambool to discuss the proposal, which is said to have already attracted positive interest. “We have the gas here; the plant is the missing link,” he says.

A similar micro LNG plant – the first in Australia – is in the process of being developed in Tasmania (see graphic above) . Similar plants in USA and England are producing, liquefied gas is made from recycled landfill gases.

NB – Alex Dronoff from BOC is speaking at the upcoming Gaseous Fuels Conference in Melbourne on June 15 2009.

Gaseous Fuels TechnologyConference - 15 June 2009

Australia, Melbourne

Gaseous Fuels Technology Conference 2009 – 15 June 2009

In an era of unprecedented clean energy initiatives by the Government of Australia, the not-for-profit Society of Automotive Engineers Australasia (SAEA) is presenting regional stakeholders with an opportunity to understand current and prospective developments in alternative automotive fuels. Australian industry experts will discuss the latest technologies, resources, challenges and experience for CNG, LNG, LPG and Hydrogen. With the increasing emphasis on alternative fuels from government and industry the event is likely to become an annual highlight on the Australasian calendar.

Conference organisers point out that while Australia is blessed with an abundance of gaseous fuels, they supply a only small portion of its fuel needs. The country’s gaseous fuels are exported aggressively, while it imports crude oil to process as transport fuels. The conference premise is that gaseous fuels offer the best opportunity to provide diversity, certainty and competitive advantage for Australia’s transport sector. This SAE-A 2009 Gaseous Fuels Technology Conference promises to uncover secrets in gas transport strategy, innovative technologies, and a taste of the futur.

UPS Grows Alternative Fuel Fleet by 30%

May 24, 2009 – 2:00 pm
UPS CNG-powered vehicles will be clearly identified.

USA, Atlanta

UPS has followed the deployment of 300 compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles earlier in 2009 and others in 2008 with an order for another 300 for its U.S. delivery fleet. 200 hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) have also been ordered. The purchase means the UPS alternative fuel fleet, already the largest such private fleet in the United States, will grow 30% — from 1,718 to 2,218 low-carbon vehicles. “UPS has been utilizing alternative fuel vehicles for more than 70 years and is clearly the industry leader in hybrid electric and CNG vehicle purchases,” said Robert Hall, director of UPS’s ground fleet.

India’s Automakers Shifting Focus from LPG to CNG Vehicles

May 24, 2009 – 2:00 pm

India, Mumbai

Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) is shifting its development focus from LPG-powered cars to compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles, says I V Rao, Managing Executive Officer (Engineering), according to India’s Economic Times (ET). “We are developing engines that would run on CNG. By early 2010, we will introduce CNG-driven cars in each of the segments we operate.” Mahinda and Mahindra are reportedly following suit — an official said the company is ready to launch CNG-driven small commercial vehicles, but was looking to an expanded infrastructure and supporting legislation to improve commercial opportunity. The moves are seen to be a response to India’s increasing natural gas supply, with RIL starting to pump out gas from its KG basin last month, and predictions that supply will penetrate to tier II and tier III cities. To begin with, it is expected that the CNG-run vehicles will occupy 5% of the total auto market in the country.
