Clean Propulsion Buses Figure Prominently in North American Orders

35% of bus orders for natural gas or hybrids

In first quarter news for 2009, New Flyer Industries Inc., a manufacturer of heavy-duty transit buses in Canada and the United States, has advised that just under 35% of new orders are for clean-propulsion (e.g., hybrid or natural gas) vehicles, which is a growing segment of New Flyer’s annual production. The segment also accounted for 76% of the company’s total backlog of orders. Some of the larger orders placed in the quarter include:

-   Golden Empire Transit District in Bakersfield, CA has ordered 27 40-foot CNG buses with options for 50 additional buses.
-   San Diego Metropolitan Transit System in San Diego, CA has exercised options to purchase 38 40-foot CNG buses.

Taxi Stockholm Expands Green Fleet With 350 Biomethane Cars

Taxi Stockholm has stepped up its natural gas taxi fleet, ordering 350 natural gas vehicles, to be fuelled by biomethane, with plans for more to come. 200 of the new vehicles are converted Volvo V 70 2.5 FT Flexfuel, with a gas-fuelled driving range of 300 kms. In addition, Taxi Stockholm ordered 100 Mercedes B 170 SMTH gas and 50 Volkswagen Passat EcoFuel GAS. In just two years Taxi Stockholm has more than halved the emissions of CO2, averaging 104 grams of CO2 per passenger-km. Taxi Stockholm CEO Mikael Andersson, CEO says the company will only purchase green cars from the end of this year and aims to reduce emissions by 70 percent by 2012.

Fuels Systems Solutions Buys FuelMaker Assets and Orders

Fuel Systems Solutions, Inc. (FSYS:Fuel Systems Solutions Inc) announced that it has agreed to acquire selected assets and technology for compressed natural gas (CNG) refueling products manufactured by FuelMaker Corporation, including the home refueling appliance marketed under the Phill(tm) brand. The transaction is valued at $7.0 million and is expected to close in the second quarter of 2009. “We believe FuelMaker’s unique technology, patents and certifications fit well with our turn-key refueling equipment solutions,” said Mariano Costamagna, chief executive officer of Fuel Systems Solutions. “The FuelMaker product line addresses both the consumer and commercial markets, which complements our existing refueling solutions for large fleets and gas stations.”

Chrysler Venezuela Presents Bi-Fuel Dodge Caliber

Chrysler LLC of Venezuela has presented its prototype model, the Dodge Caliber GNV, with a bi-fuel system designed to use natural gas and gasoline. Displayed at Venezuela’s Off Road & Adventure Festival 2009 held in San Diego, Caracas, the vehicle was designed and tested to comply with the specifications of Project Autogas, the automotive policy implemented by the Venezuelan Government. AEC Forms Strategic Alliance with Norinco

Advanced Engine Components Ltd (AEC), producer of patented electronic fuel injection and engine management technologies for natural gas engines,  has settled the terms of a Strategic Alliance Agreement with Norinco Equipment Co Ltd (“Norinco”) of China. Norinco is a subsidiary of state-owned China North Industries Group Corporation (“CNGC”), involved in the development and export of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles and engines. Norinco will utilise its brand and CNGC’s extensive domestic and international distribution network to promote CNG trucks, buses, chassis, engines, components and other natural gas related products.

Birmingham City to Lease 70 CNG Vehicles

Birmingham News reports that the City of Birmingham, Alabama, will lease 70 natural gas-fueled garbage and rubbish trucks and apply for a $5 million federal grant to build a compressed natural gas (CNG) station. Mayor Larry Langford said the new trucks will make up the largest fleet of natural gas-fueled refuse trucks in the Southeast. The vehicles are expected to save more than 5,200 barrels of oil a year. Officials from Energen and Alagasco will help seek the $5 million grant for a CNG station.

Increased LNG Fuel for Heavy Duty Transport in Western Australia

Western Australia’s Energy Minister, Peter Collier, has officially opened the newly-commissioned Wesfarmers Energy liquid natural gas (LNG) plant in Kwinana. Mr Collier said its development would expand the availability of LNG in Western Australia for the heavy-duty vehicle, industrial gas and remote power station markets. “Wesfarmers Energy has successfully accomplished its vision of developing the niche LNG market for heavy-duty vehicles in WA and on the east coast,” Mr Collier said, adding that while the use of LNG in the transport sector was a recent development, it had already proved itself as a cost-effective fuel source for power generation in remote areas of the State’s north. CNG Passat Rated Best Environmentally Friendly Car by ADAC

Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil Club (ADAC), the German drivers’ association, has declared the compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered VW Passat 1.4 TSI Trendline EcoFuel to be currently the most environmentally friendly car in Europe, achieving the maximum rating of five stars. Scoring a total of 92/100 points, the car consumed 4.9 kg of natural gas per 100 km, emitting 134g/km in ADAC’s on-road testing of CO2 emissions for 42/50 points, and a maximum 50/50 points in ADAC’s Ecotest (ECOT) for pollutants, according to a report on Focus.

Spanish Fleet Operators Increasingly in Favour of NGVs

In the most recent meeting of “Foro Pro Clima Madrid” (Madrid Forum for Climate), held on April 14th in Madrid, a consortium of more than 35 major companies signed an agreement to incorporate eco-friendly vehicles within the next three years, then accounting for 6% of their respective fleets. The consortium consists of a number of Spanish companies, operating in the field of food & beverage distribution, construction, delivery, telecommunication and other services, who have conjointly declared their commitment to increase the percentage of cleaner vehicles, such as natural gas vehicles ((NGVs), in their motor pool.

MBTech Gives Mercedes-Benz SLK a CNG Makeover

MBtech, a development partner for alternative drive systems, has presented a natural gas powered sports car study at a natural gas innovation show at the Nürburgring. The study utilises the four-cylinder Mercedes-Benz SLK. The CNG demonstrator generates more than 146 kW and a maximum torque of 270 Nm, which accelerates the SLK from a standstill to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds. It has a top speed of 244 km/h. “With the CNG demonstrator we have realized an uncompromisingly sporty and powerful vehicle engine with substantially reduced CO2 emission,” stated Andreas Biemelt, the Team Leader for Otto Engine Combustion Process Development at MBtech Powertrain and the Head of the CNG demonstrator project.

NGV Fuel Demand in Peru Drives US $400 million Investment by Promigas

The Colombian company, Promigas, reportedly plans to invest some US 400 million dollars over the next four years in Peru’s natural gas distribution network through Cálidda, Gas Natural del Peru and Peruvian Natural Gas (PGN), said its President Antonio Celia, adding the sum could be higher if demand continues to increase. Investment has been accelerated due to the high growth in demand for natural gas vehicles (NGVs) which in turn has been driven by Peru’s ‘natural growth’ over recent years, according to a report by Andina.

Kenworth T800 LNG Trucks Now Available for Production in North America

Kenworth Truck Company has advised its T800 Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) trucks are now available for factory order and production. The new model, first reported by NGV Global in January 2008, is equipped with the Westport Innovations LNG fuel system and Westport GX 15-liter engine, which provides up to 450hp and 1,650 lb-ft of torque and meets U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB) emissions certification standards. The Westport GX engine is based on the Cummins ISX 15-liter engine.

Iveco is gearing-up production of its right-hand drive natural gas powered Daily following the success of a six month trial which saw the vehicle used for recycling and street cleansing operations on behalf of Camden Council. Throughout the trial the Daily 65C14G cage tipper ran exclusively on fuel supplied by Gasrec, the UK’s first commercial producer of Liquid Biomethane (LBM), allowing direct comparisons to be drawn against similar vehicles operating on both diesel and compressed natural gas (CNG).
