Skyrocketing Demand for NGVs in Peru

December 11, 2008 – 2:00 pm

Peru

The demand for new low-cost NGVs in Peru has increased 350 percent in just one year, said Jorge Mongilardi, general manager of Ecolinea, the Peruvian distributor of the Volkswagen Gol sub-compact NGV.   According to Mongilardi, demand is being driven by the lower cost of CNG as a vehicle fuel and the increased concern about air pollution.  According to the Natural Gas Vehicle Peruvian Chamber (CPGNV), in 2008 to date, over 51,000 vehicles have been converted to CNG, and 100,000 are projected for 2009.

US EPA Sets 2009 Renewable Fuels Standard

December 11, 2008 – 12:39 am

USA

This week, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) set its renewable fuels standard at 10.21 percent for 2009.  The standard, published in the Nov. 21 Federal Register, is intended to lead to the use of 11.1 billion gallons of renewable fuel in 2009, including 500,000 gallons of biodiesel and renewable diesel.  The 10.21 percent standard is calculated as a percentage of the amount of renewable fuel to be used, divided into the total annual gasoline expected to be used in 2009. As reported by NGVAmerica, publication of the renewable fuel standard, a requirement of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, is applicable to refiners, importers and certain blenders of gasoline.  In other words, the companies must either buy and blend 11.1 billion gallons of renewable fuel into their gasoline and diesel or by credits earned by others.

CNG Asia Market Opportunities Identified

December 7, 2008 – 2:00 pm

USA, New York

Mr. Qin’an Ji, the Chairman and CEO of China Natural Gas, has declared his belief that China’s shift to natural gas vehicles is picking up the pace as a result of recent government initiatives, including the recently announced gasoline and diesel fuel tax which will begin in 2009.  His view is supported by an Oct 2008 Asia NGV Communications article, entitled Asia’s CNG modified vehicles market: cost and security issues, which provided statistics and opportunities for the CNG market in Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Iran, and Indonesia. There are a variety of policies and incentives in these countries to encourage vehicular CNG usage. Mr Ji continues, “Importantly for us, these findings coincide with China’s national policies to stimulate the CNG market, and we intend to capitalize on these opportunities both inside and outside of China.” (Press Release)

BAF Teams Up With Landi Renzo in US

December 2, 2008 – 2:00 pm

USA, Dallas

BAF Technologies (natural gas vehicle upfits) says it has been chosen by Landi Renzo (natural gas and propane vehicle fuel systems and components) to be one of its cooperative options for testing and marketing bi-fuel vehicle conversions and systems in the United States. The two companies will work together to secure EPA certification for several sedan models through a joint effort between their engineering and manufacturing teams. BAF will market and sell the bi-fuel vehicle conversions as well as provide fuel systems and training to their authorized conversion partners and dealers. “With the current fueling infrastructure in the US, a bi-fuel vehicle is a terrific option,” says John Bacon, BAF’s president. “Our goal is to offer a bi-fuel vehicle conversion for less than $10,000. By making converted vehicles more affordable, we increase market adoption which in turn will increase demand for more CNG fueling stations resulting in more options for the consumer. That’s when real change will happen.” Research and development on the new system is beginning immediately and the first EPA-certified, sellable units are expected in the first quarter of 2009.
