December 13, 2007 – 10:24 pm

Spain, Barcelona

Super computer tackles 7 scenarios
Concludes 10% of cars or 50% of delivery vans most effective measures

The Gas Natural Foundation has presented a study on how natural vehicular gas could help reduce atmospheric pollution in Madrid and Barcelona. Air quality in Madrid and Barcelona would improve considerably if just 10% of their cars were replaced by vehicles fuelled by natural gas. This is the finding of the study “Improving air quality by converting to the use of natural gas in automation. Applicable to Madrid and Barcelona.”

California Gets OK to Regulate Greenhouse Gas Emissions

December 12, 2007 – 7:00 pm

STOP PRESS -  Developments since this item was published have had implications affecting the outcome of this decision. New energy legislation signed by the US President effectively makes the CA (and
“follower” states) waiver request moot.  The Secretary of the USEPA has said that (1) the
higher CAFÉ standards required under the new law, and (2) the Renewable Fuel
Standard calling for 36 Billion gallons of renewable fuels use by 2022 surpass
the CA initiative and make for better national policy to address GHG rather
than a “patchwork” of state policies. NGV Global will cover this story in more detail when we return in 2008.

Could provide opportunities for natural gas vehicles

Another chapter has been written in the long running battle between State governments and auto manufacturers in the US over whether States have the right to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles. Several States, led by California, have argued the right to do so, while auto manufacturers have argued that such regulations would effectively be fuel economy standards which are outside the jurisdiction of State governments. The ruling could become a boon for alternative fuels such as natural gas, which delivers inherent greenhouse gas benefits and could contribute to massive greenhouse gas reductions.
